5 Signs Your Lock Needs Replacing

5 Signs Your Lock Needs Replacing

Locks rarely last forever. Daily use, wear, weather and problems with the door itself can gradually affect how well a lock operates.

The difficulty is knowing when a lock simply needs a minor adjustment and when replacement is the better option.

Here are five warning signs worth paying attention to.

1. Your key is becoming difficult to turn

A lock should operate smoothly.

If you’re regularly having to wiggle the key, pull it backwards slightly or use extra force to turn it, something isn’t right.

The problem could be the key, cylinder, internal lock mechanism or even the alignment of the door. Have it checked rather than waiting until the key stops turning completely.

2. The lock feels loose

Movement around the cylinder, handle or lock body shouldn’t be ignored.

Loose components may simply need adjustment, but they can also indicate wear or damage. A locksmith can determine whether the existing hardware can be secured or should be replaced.

3. The lock regularly sticks

Occasional stiffness can quickly become a complete failure.

If a lock is becoming increasingly unreliable, don’t wait until you’re standing outside your home unable to open the door.

Early inspection can often identify the cause before it becomes an emergency.

4. Your keys have been lost or stolen

Even when the lock itself works perfectly, there are situations where changing it can provide greater peace of mind.

If you’ve lost your keys and don’t know where they are—or believe they may have been stolen—changing the relevant lock or cylinder means the missing key will no longer operate it.

The same consideration applies when moving into a new home if you’re uncertain who has copies of the existing keys.

5. The lock or door has been damaged

Visible damage around the cylinder, handles, door or frame should be investigated.

The lock may still appear to operate normally while having damaged or weakened components.

A locksmith can inspect the complete installation and determine whether adjustment, repair or replacement is appropriate.

Repair or replace?

A faulty lock doesn’t always need replacing.

In some cases, adjusting the door or replacing an individual component is sufficient. In others, installing a new lock is the safer and more economical long-term solution.
